Photograph a mushroom for reference

Record what you can see for learning, while keeping the specimen and its surroundings in place.

1. Observe in place

Follow the rules of the place you are visiting. The National Park Service encourages photographing interesting mushrooms and leaving them for others to enjoy.

2. Record one specimen from different angles

In Mycovela, use up to three photos of the same specimen. Where visible without disturbing it, compare side, top and underside views. Do not mix photos of different mushrooms in one attempt.

3. Compare the references carefully

Read the possible matches, visible features, habitat notes and look-alikes. Missing features and similar-looking species can leave important uncertainty.

4. Learn with a local expert

Use regional references and a qualified local expert to continue learning. A photo or app result does not establish that a mushroom is safe to eat.

Keep this in mind

Keep observation separate from consumption decisions. The app’s output and this guide are educational references, not confirmation of a species or its edibility.
